Pageants have a reputation of being like a beauty contest, or for girls who have nothing better to do with their lives. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Winning a pageant is so much more than the sash and crown. It gives you a huge platform to promote causes that you feel strongly about, and allows you to become more involved in your community.
And even if you don’t win, competing in a pageant could be life changing. Some girls might get scouted by a modeling agency, some may make connections that will help in their careers, but some just make amazing friends and learn a whole lot about something totally new. (Or maybe some just want the cool goody bag!)
For me, the major thing I got out of competing for Miss New York Teen USA was confidence.
Especially since this was my first pageant, driving down to Whiteplains, NY was a looong drive. And if you’re like me, you know how anxious you can get just sitting for hours on the way to do something you’ve never done before. I cried, multiple times, solely out of fear and worry that I was going to make a fool out of myself.
But the reality was, the girls that I was competing against were some of the nicest people I have ever met. The type of girls that were there were the type to lift you up, help you out, and give never ending love and support. It was less like a competition and more like summer camp. I felt like I knew these girls forever, when in reality I met them the day before.
The whole weekend was jam packed with interviews, rehearsals, dinners, and more rehearsals. Through every moment, the new friends I made were by my side.
While rehearsing, we had to watch the Miss contestants rehearse, and they had to watch us rehearse too. Seeing so many girls who just exuberated confidence was so impactful on my own confidence and self image. Nobody was worried about anyone else and what people would think of them. Girls wore whatever clothes they wanted, as much or as little makeup as they wanted, and did their hair as they pleased. Some girls would show up to rehearsal in pajamas, but others were dressed to the nines. But the thing that stood out the most was when they were on stage, they weren’t looking at anybody else, it was like they were the only ones up there.
I went home that weekend with a whole new sense of self-love and confidence. I realized that people will always look at you, so make it worth their while and be someone to remember. Don’t worry about what other people are thinking about you because the only person’s opinion that matters is your own. I felt like a whole new person and was so upset that the weekend was over already. That experience truly changed my life in a way that I simply cannot explain.
Not to mention, I ended up winning an award for my interview, which I did not see coming, at all. The interviews were exactly two minutes long, someone actually sat at the door keeping track of the time. There was a panel of judges asking you questions. And yes, it was nerve-racking. The last question that I was asked was so difficult to answer. I took a long time trying to find the right words and before I knew it my time was up. So when I heard my name announced for the award, I was shocked.
That just goes to show that someone with zero experience can go on to win an award at such a prestigious pageant. Even accomplishing something that used to scare you can boost your confidence so much. So, if you have ever wondered what it would be like to compete in a pageant, or even for a split second thought about how cool it would be to wear a crown and sash, go ahead and register to compete in one. It is a decision you will never regret.
I can say without a doubt that I will compete in another pageant again some day, and hopefully I will have a chance at winning the crown!
