If you know me, you know that I do a lot of shopping second hand. I love popping into consignment shops, looking for a great new addition to my wardrobe.
Plato’s Closet and Clothes Mentor are two stores in my area that I shop in at least a couple times every month. Every single time I walk through those doors, I find something to bring home with me. Almost all of my Lululemon items have been found at Plato’s for amazing prices, and even some still had original tags attached. I’ve vowed to myself to never pay full price for Lulu ever again. Second hand only!!
Additionally, with the technological age we live in, of course there are online second hand shopping options! I typically use two apps. One is Depop, and the other is Poshmark. Depop has more trendy items, ones that you especially couldn’t find in just any store. Whereas Poshmark has more everyday and luxury items. These apps are nice because a lot of sellers will offer bundle discounts. So, if you want to purchase more than one thing from them, you’ll get an even better price.
Not only do I shop at these stores, but I am obsessed with selling my old clothes here too. There’s nothing better than getting some extra money from something you never wear anymore. A few times a year I will completely clean out my closet and go through all of my clothes, purging everything that I know will not get worn. Then, I’ll list the items on Depop and Poshmark, and wait to see what sells. After a while, I take the clothes to Plato’s and Clothes Mentor and see if they will buy any of it. Sometimes, they take a lot, but other times they don’t take much of my stuff at all. In that case, I list some of it on Ebay for pretty cheap and it almost always sells.
Now that I’ve gotten a little bit of background out of the way, here is why shopping second hand is the best thing you could do.
First of all, it saves you money! Who doesn’t like saving some money? It’s always so nice when you buy three things for the cost that it usually would be for only one item. I have bought a $130 Lululemon jacket, in brand new condition, for only $25. I’ve also bought three pieces from Are You Am I on Depop, which together would’ve cost over $1,200, for only $550. Not to mention, the bundle discounts that I mentioned earlier can save you so much money too. Especially on Depop and Poshmark, you can negotiate the price, that way you can make sure you’re not spending more than you need to.
Secondly, it’s sustainable! The fashion industry is a lot less ethical and sustainable than you’d believe. So many companies are underpaying their workers, using manufacturers with awful working conditions, using prison labor, and more horrifying things. Not to mention, the massive damage the industry does on the environment. It takes 700 gallons of water to make a single t-shirt. Textile dyeing and treatment takes up 17-20% of industrial water pollution. The industry produces more carbon emissions than the flight and maritime industries combined.
